Meat Free May

There is still time to sign up to #meatfreemay , and take part in going meat free during the month of May with Friends of The Earth. The majority of people eat meat twice a day without even realising it. This is not only damaging to our health but also our environment! Here are some stats to really put things into perspective:

– Livestock production makes up 14.5% of total global greenhouse gas emissions and is one of the causes of deforestation and climate change.
– Our taste for fish had been stripping the seas; over 70% of the world’s fish stocks are over or fully exploited.
– Our health is suffering: a shift to lower-meat diets in the UK could prevent 45,000 early deaths each year and save the NHS over £1.2 billion per year.

– There is a link between over consumption of red and processed meat to bowel cancer.

Cutting down on the amount of meat and fish is easier than it seems, so look out for some of our tasty recipes coming up to help you help our planet!

Living Wage Foundation

Here at Good Food in Greenwich we are promoting the Living Wage and encourage other employers to implement this great benefit and service to their staff.

The Living Wage Foundation recognises and celebrates the leadership shown by Living Wage Employers across the UK. We believe that work should be the surest way out of poverty, and by getting paid the Living Wage, which is currently set at £9.15 an hour it will enrich society and promote fairness. Our charter recognises and promotes this fairness in local businesses, and encourages businesses and organisations who pledge to consider this and how to work towards it.

Applications to the Living Wage Foundation can be submitted, online here. The application form is quite simple and will only take a couple of minutes to complete.

By signing up to The Living Wage Foundation you will be accredited and awarded the Living Wage Employer Mark. There is also support and guidance available, not to mention a heap of other benefits available-  read more about it here!

Best of all… Royal Borough of Greenwich is offering discounted business rates to the first 100 businesses that achieve accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation Accreditation during 2015/16. Accredited businesses will receive a reduction in their business rates to cover five years’ worth of subscriptions to the Living Wage Foundation. The business rates relief will be offered as lump sum.  Please submit your application for the business rates relief scheme as soon as possible via the following link at the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

So what are you waiting for? It is not only morally right, but makes good business sense too!

Big Lunch Extras! A Great Success With Lots Of Fun!

We had the pleasure of spending our weekend down at the Woolwich Community Centre for the Big Lunch Extras delivered by our lovely friends Eden Project. It all kicked off nice and early at 9am on Saturday 25th April with local charities turning up for a fun filled day of activities, which included a fantastic energetic dance workshop hosted by Greenwich Dance. Those who were not shaking a leg in the main hall were involved in sewing, social enterprise or healthy cookery workshops. Made in Greenwich and Rosa from Guarida Cafe generously supplied us a heart warming lunch, which had some people asking for seconds! There were also lots happening outside with the front of the centre having colourful makeover by the talented artists from Thieu Design and Amara Por Dios. All in all a terrific day that left everyone buzzing afterwards and a big thank you to everyone who helped out!
