Fishing has a huge impact on our marine environment, and it’s not just fish stocks that are affected. Sensitive habitats, endangered species and the marine food chain need to be maintained to keep the oceans healthy and productive. The impacts are complex, hard to measure and vary from one fishery to the next.

But here in Greenwich, our school meals are definitely part of the solution.  GS Plus Ltd only permit the use of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified frozen fish for all their menus.  This means the fish our kids are eating at school is only from MSC certified fisheries that meet robust requirements for fish stocks, ecosystem impacts and effective management.  With some scientists suggesting that eating fish could be a thing of the past for future generations, it is vital that we all do our bit to support sustainable fish.

To help raise awareness in schools, GS Plus promoted their menus across the borough via a theme day, which provided an opportunity to teach the children in a fun way why we need to look after our oceans today for tomorrow’s generations.  In July 72 schools tool part in the ‘Fish and Kids’ campaign in conjunction with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to educate the need for environmental and sustainable food sourcing with a fun themed school menu.

MSC also provided teachers resource packs for all of the schools so that this theme could be followed through within the classrooms…

Only serving sustainable fish really demonstrates GS Plus’s commitment to sustainable and healthy food, and is one of the many reasons why they’ve got the Gold Food for Life catering mark.  Food for Life is about making good food the easy choice for everyone – making healthy, tasty and sustainable meals the norm for all to enjoy, reconnecting people with where their food comes from, teaching them how it’s grown and cooked, and championing the importance of well-sourced ingredients.  With GS Plus catering the meals, we know our kids are getting a healthy AND sustainable meal every day.

But, it’s not just the big catering providers who can serve sustainable fish.  We can all do our bit by buying MSC certified fish – just look for the blue tick!  Demanding fish that has been caught using sustainable methods helps ensure our great, great-grandchildren will also be able to enjoy their Friday fish supper!
