Top tips for saving money on shopping bills
- The average family with children in the UK throws away about £60 of food per month. Plan meals before shopping so you buy what you need, rather than buying food that may be wasted.
- Before shopping check what is in the fridge and cupboards so you can plan meals around foods that need using up.
- Make a shopping list and stick to it.
- Buy from supermarket ‘own brand’ and ‘value’ ranges; these are usually as good as more expensive, branded products. Money Saving Expert estimates you can save £1,500 annually on food bills by using cheaper brands.
- Reduced items, special offers and buy-one-get-one-free deals may help save money but try not to be tempted by offers on items you do not need, as this will add to the cost of your shopping. It is also important to compare prices as often special offer items are not as good value for money as the same products in a different range.
- Shop around to find better deals. If you can get to Woolwich, Deptford or Lewisham, the markets are a great source of reasonably priced fruit and veg.
- Cooking from basic ingredients at home is generally cheaper than buying ready-made food and takeaways. Attend a free community cookery club the find out how.
- Rather than throwing away leftovers, save these for lunch the following day.
